IMANI Centre for Policy & Education (IMANI) in collaboration with Ghana Oil and Gas for Inclusive Growth (GOGIG) is inviting you to a report launch and workshop on the effects of upstream gas contracting on electricity tariffs and inclusive growth looking at the case of the Sankofa-Gye-Nyame gas project.
The Sankofa-Gye-Nyame (SGN) fields, part of the broader Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) oil and gas fields which are being developed via an Integrated Oil and Gas Project, is expected to deliver up to 180 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of gas over a 20 year period. The discovery, development and utilization of gas from the OCTP is crucial given the government’s plans to utilize this gas to facilitate stable supply of electricity.
After the contract was signed for the development of the SGN fields, public concerns were raised regarding the relatively high gas price ($9.8/mmbtu) agreed between the government of Ghana and the OCTP partners. The high gas price was believed to be as a result of the limited transparency in the contracting process for the OCTP contract. The expectation is that, the high gas price will have a negative effect on electricity tariffs and thereby affect household income and industrial growth.
Research and analysis has been conducted to assess the transparency of the upstream natural gas contracting process in Ghana using internationally accepted best practice as a yardstick, and to evaluate the impact on gas price, electricity tariffs and inclusive growth. The report will be launched and discussed at the workshop. Details of the workshop are as follows:
Date: 27th June 2019
Time: 9:00am
Venue: Alisa Hotel
We trust you will honor this invitation and share your opinion on the subject. Please confirm attendance by emailing info@imanighana.org or calling Rosemary on IMANI’s line 0554309966.
